Global Residence

What gets you out of bed and why should you relocate to the periphery?

“What is career?”

“What gets you out of bed?”

Is success measured by “accumulated bullshit” or by the “number of people you positively impact” in a short life?

As this year’s Bansko Nomad Fest draws to a close, I wanted to share the most salient extract of the most rousing speech of last year’s event. That speech was – and remains – relevant to all digital nomads or remote workers everywhere.

The speaker was Andreas Wil Gerdes, who got into business and made money early in life, and has now become a champion for – and thought leader of – digital nomadism. This is the same entrepreneur who made his money when he got into mobile telephony in the late eighties, at a time when mobile phones were clunky and half as large as a forearm.

This has given him a lifelong interest into mobile communications and working systems.

Now he passionately believes that digital nomadism, or location independence lifestyle, will change us for the better.

In another comment published in another video by JournalismPlus, Gerdes said that the transformation we are seeing is such that we are moving from a “work-centric life to human-centric life.”

So instead of spending a life stuck in job you can barely bear, decide what gets you out of bed and put mission over money. And, if your income shrinks, then think geoarbitrage: move to a place where you can have quality of life for lower cost of living.

There are many such places in every continent in the world. There are even such places within countries. And those places usually come with another great quality: intact nature, inspiring landscape, plenty of outdoor activities for more wholesome life.

One of those places is where Gerdes delivered his speech last year, and where this year’s nomad fest is drawing to a close – Bansko, in Bulgaria.

Coworking Bansko

A thriving remote work community has emerged in Bansko in a few years. It now has a worldschooling programme, a concept that mixes learning and fun in BanskoLab, and around half a dozen coworking places – that’s more coworking places per capita than anywhere else.

The best coworking places are Coworking Bansko, Nestwork and Altspace.

Altspace

Coworking Bansko, which pioneered coworking in Bansko, is well-established with an array of activities and a strong sense of community among its members. Altspace is boutique, and has an open feel and inspiring interior design; and it seems more oriented to the more sedate, mature nomads. Nestwork has grown solidly this year, and it is in the process of expanding into a larger space.
